Being LGBT in Asia

Project Background:

“Being LGBT in Asia: A Participatory Review and Analysis of the Legal and Social Environment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Civil Society” is a joint analysis undertaken by UNDP and USAID together with grassroots LGBT organizations and community leaders to understand the challenges faced by LGBT people in Asia. It will leverage value-added innovations to educate development stakeholders about LGBT-inclusive development.

This analysis will cover 6 priority countries: China, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to the six priority countries, additional resources and experiences will be drawn more widely from East and Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Chinese Taipei/Taiwan, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Timor-Leste, regional civil society organizations, academic institutions and private sector partners.

Objective:

To raise awareness on the political, legal, social and institutional environment in which LGBT people live their lives in Asia, depicting both barriers to human rights as well as successes towards equality. Additionally, this project aims to disseminate knowledge amongst LGBT communities, civil society organizations, and development stakeholders in the region.

Impact to be achieved through Crowdmap:

·       To engage LGBT community members and organizations by providing a platform to report LGBT activities and findings.

·       To act as a network connecting organizations, activists, and individuals from the entire region.

·       To have the ability to highlight and plot the progress of different LGBT movements across Asia and also raise awareness on the human rights abuses and reports of discrimination against LGBT individuals in the region.

·       Lastly, to increase national dialogues between LGBT organization representatives, advocates, and human rights defenders.
